EPHEMERA
A brief lesson regarding the word ‘Ephemera’. Definition from the Oxford language is “things that exist or are used or enjoyed for only a short time”. For example items printed on paper, card or other material. Subjects are varied from greeting cards, receipts, advertising and more.
Hand written works today are slowly disappearing due to our new (not so new) electronic age. In my humble opinion it is even more important to preserve theses items that may be of historic value, whether personal or companies that have folded over time. These days when we get a receipt, it is either emailed to us or on thermal paper that fades over time.
Here are a few examples of Ephemera. If you are interested may I suggest you contact the the ephemera society of Australia inc. You might even wish to join.
To use ‘Sellotape’ or not to use ‘Sellotape’ that is the question!
Buying and selling books have become one of my passions. Often I have come across books that have had commercial sellotape (or sticky tape) used to mend tears in pages or the book in general is falling apart!
Not to get into the scientific reasons why sellotape is bad, let’s just say that it sometimes cross links with fibres in the paper which in turn cause a chemical reaction. E.g discolouration of the paper and brittle.
I have come across a few blogs that explain in fuller detail why we should not use the ‘handy sellotape dispenser’ but perhaps have some acid free tape from a conservator outlet on hand.
If you get the chance try looking up www.westdean.org.uk blog.
Basic hints on buying quality china
First rule of thumb.
BUY QUALITY
Are there any cracks, chips or heavy crazing, If so this will devalue the item.
Is it hand painted or a transfer print? The best way to tell the difference is to look with an eyeglass, and look for minute dots on the picture which is a ‘tell tale sign’ that it is a print transfer. Some items will have a print transfer as well as being hand painted.
Is there a makers mark? Normally you will find the makers mark on the underside of the china piece. Eg Royal Albert, Carlton Ware etc. there are many porcelain makers around the world, and the internet is a great place to do your research. There are some wonderful reference books to be bought that has makers marks.
Is it signed? Excellent.
This is very basic hints, but we all have to start somewhere. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any help.
